Is Droid the New iPhone?

Apple's iPhone is doubtlessly one of the most popular smartphones. However, the Droid X by Motorola has a lot of the same features, and many users prefer Android Market devices due to the more open philosophy of the designers of the operating system. Ever since the Team Android phenomenon started trending on Twitter, it became clear that consumers are beginning to embrace phones like the Droid X as much as they did the iPhone in the beginning.

The Similarities

In terms of functionality, both types of devices offer a lot of the same features. The iPhone 4 can be augmented with mobile apps from the Apple Store. These applications reach the market after intense review by Apple with many developers getting rejected when their apps don't meet quality standards.

The Droid X features apps as well, and users can download them from the Android Market interface. Android apps are made available without an intense review process like the one conducted by the Apple Store.

Both devices have cameras and an operating system that functions much like a portable computer. Each phone allows you to browse mobile web pages using a provided browser.

The Differences

With regard to hardware, some Android phones offer better features than the iPhone. However, many reviewers have given higher marks to the iPhone 4 than the Droid X according to a few statistical benchmarks. The Droid X is less expensive to own and operate.

Both have comparable features, so wealthier consumers may prefer Apple's smartphone whereas the Droid X is a fine choice for someone on a budget. The open philosophy of the designers of the Android operating system also attracts PC fans.

The Growing Buzz About Android Devices

The iPhone was the first true smartphone, so many early users will remain loyal to the brand. That said, there is a noticeable buzz about Android smartphones like the Droid X. The iPhone was initially only available on one carrier, so Android smartphones are a blessing to those consumers that already have contracts with other service providers.

Is the Droid the new iPhone? Essentially, it is for certain consumers. However, the iPhone itself is a quality phone that will stand the test of time. The market is big enough for multiple devices. If you have had your eyes on your friend's iPhone and have an existing contract with a different carrier, feel free to try an Android device as a suitable alternative. Motorola's Droid X is a great option, and there are other devices available as well like the G2 Google phone for T-Mobile.
